Livorno, city, central Italy, capital of Leghorn Province, in Tuscany (Toscana) Region, on the Ligurian Sea. Livorno is a major seaport and commercial center. Shipbuilding is the leading industry, followed by metalworking (iron, steel, copper, and aluminum), petroleum refining, and the manufacture of electric motors, glass, and chemicals.
Livorno is largely a modern city. The Italian naval academy, naval shipyards, and a naval arsenal are located here. Places of interest include the cathedral (late 16th century, restored after being severely damaged during World War II) and the Fortezza Vecchia (Italian, “Old Fort”), erected (1521-1534) as part of a fortification system for the harbor.
