Catanzaro, city, southern Italy, capital of Catanzaro Province and Calabria Region, near the Ionian Sea. The city is an important rail junction and a center of trade in wheat, oil, and wine. Founded in the 10th century, Catanzaro was famous in the 17th century for the silks, velvet, and damask produced here. Population (1997 estimate) 97,220.
