Tatabánya, city in northwestern Hungary, capital of Komárom-Esztergom County, in a valley at the northeastern end of the Vértes Mountains, near Budapest. A road hub on a railroad, it is an important mining center and lies in a region of lignite mining and limestone quarrying. The city has aluminum foundries, thermoelectric power plants, and factories producing briquettes, bricks, cement, and carbide. A school of mining is located here; nearby is the Selim (Szelimluk) Cave, a limestone formation that dates from the Ice Age. The city expanded through annexation of the mining towns of Bánhida and Felsgalla in the 1950s.
