Szolnok, city in east central Hungary, seat of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, a port at the confluence of the Tisza and Zagyva rivers. It is a manufacturing, commercial, and transportation center. Major products include chemicals, furniture, textiles, and footwear. The Damjanich János Museum, containing archaeological and local history collections, is here. Health resorts making use of hot subterranean waters are in the area. Szolnok developed by the 10th century as a river port and a distribution point for rock salt mined in the Maramuresului Mountains (now part of Romania). In the 20th century, the city became a transportation center, at the hub of railroad and road systems.
