Gyor (German Raab), city in northwestern Hungary, capital of Gyor-Moson-Sopron County, at the confluence of the Raab (Rába) River and a tributary of the Danube River. Situated about halfway between Budapest and Vienna, Austria, Gyor has served as a gateway to both Eastern and Western Europe throughout its history. Gyor is a market for cereal grains and livestock raised in the surrounding area. Locomotives and railroad cars, farm implements, textiles, chemicals, vegetable oils, candy, and bricks are also produced here. It is a Roman Catholic bishopric, with a 12th-century cathedral. Gyor was established as a Magyar stronghold in about 900, on the ruins of the ancient Roman outpost of Arabona.
