City Park, with its half-dozen museums and a lake that is converted to an ice rink in the winter, is Budapest's most popular park. Other major parks include People's Park in southeastern Pest, and Margaret Island, which has a swimming complex and a thermal spa. The Budapest Zoo, although small, is packed with art nouveau animal houses designed by prominent Hungarian architects of the early 20th century, including Károly Kós.
Budapest is one of the only major world cities with substantial hot springs, which the city has made use of since the Ottoman occupation in the 16th and 17th centuries. The most remarkable pools and baths in present-day Budapest are the art nouveau Gellért Bath and the Császár Swimming Pool, both in Buda; the neoclassical Hajós Alfréd Sports Pool and the Palatinus Bath, on Margaret Island; and Széchenyi Bath and the large Dagály Bath in Pest.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
