After 43 years of centralized Communist rule in Hungary, self-government was restored to Budapest in 1990. The city is run by a directly elected chief mayor and a 66-member city council. Council members represent political parties, not districts, with each party's number of representatives determined by the percentage of the vote it receives. The city's day-to-day administration is headed by a chief notary.
