Witten, city in west central Germany, on the Ruhr River, near Dortmund, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen). An industrial center, Witten contains factories producing iron and steel, machinery, and glass. Witten was chartered as a city in 1825. The city sustained heavy damage in World War II (1939-1945).
