Mülheim an Der Ruhr, city in west central Germany, on the Ruhr River, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), near Essen. The city is a manufacturing and coal-mining center situated in the Ruhr industrial district; products include iron and steel, machinery, chemicals, clothing, and construction materials. A center for coal research is in Mülheim. First mentioned in the late 11th century, the community received a charter in 1808 and control of the city passed to Prussia in 1814.
