Marl, town, west central Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) on the northern fringe of the great Ruhr industrial district. Major industries here are coal mining and the manufacture of chemicals. The town was first mentioned in the 9th century but did not develop as an industrial center until the late 19th century.
