Lünen, city, west central Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), on the Datteln-Hamm Canal and the Lippe River, near Dortmund. It is a rail hub, a port, and a coal-mining and manufacturing center. Machinery, motor vehicles, and aluminum and glass items are produced. The castle of Cappenburg (17th century, rebuilt 18th century) is nearby. Lünen was chartered in 1265.
