Herne, city in west central Germany, a port on the Rhine-Herne Canal, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen). The city is located in the Ruhr industrial district. Manufactures include electronic equipment, textiles, and machinery. The main growth of Herne dates from the mid-19th century, when it became a coal-mining center.
