Hagen, city in west central Germany on the Ennepe River, in the Ruhr industrial district, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), near Dortmund. Manufactures include iron and steel, textiles, processed food, chemicals, and paper. Alabaster and limestone are quarried nearby. Hagen was chartered in 1746 and became a major industrial center in the late 19th century. It was badly damaged during World War II (1939-1945).
