Düren, city, west central Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), on the Rur River. It is a manufacturing and transportation center, where textiles, chemicals, glass, and metal products are produced. Diets were convened here by Charlemagne in the 8th century, when the community was known as Marcodurum. It passed to the dukes of Jülich in the 13th century and was burned by the troops of Emperor Charles V in 1543. The city was severely damaged in World War II.
