Wismar, city in north central Germany, in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on Wismar Bay (an arm of the Baltic Sea). It is a seaport and an industrial center. Shipbuilding, commercial fishing, and the manufacture of machinery and processed food are important to the city's economy. Chartered in 1229, Wismar became a flourishing member of the Hanseatic League and passed to Sweden with the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. In 1903, Sweden relinquished all claims to the city, which had been under the control of the state of Mecklenburg-Schwerin since 1803. Wismar was heavily damaged during World War II (1939-1945).
