Hanau, in full Hanau am Main, city, west central Germany, in Hessen, at the confluence of the Kinzig and Main rivers. It is a major jewelry-manufacturing center and also has chemical and rubber industries. The city, chartered in 1303, was rebuilt along traditional lines after being severely damaged in World War II. Population (1997) 89,107.
