Garmisch-Partenkirchen, town in south central Germany, in the state of Bavaria. It is an internationally famous winter sports center situated in the Bavarian Alps at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak. The economy depends heavily on tourism. The town, formed in 1935 by the merger of Garmisch and Partenkirchen, was the site of the 1936 Olympic Winter Games. Population (1997) 26,992.
