Tübingen, city in southwestern Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, on the Neckar River, near Stuttgart. The chief manufactures are precision instruments, machinery, printed materials, and textiles. Points of interest include the Church of Saint George (15th century) and Hohentübingen Castle (built 16th century on 11th-century foundations), which now houses part of the noted University of Tübingen (1477). The city received a charter about 1200 and passed to Württemberg in the mid-14th century. Population (1997) 82,260.
