Lens, city in northern France, in Pas-de-Calais Department, near Lille. Lens is the chief industrial center of a major coal basin; manufactures include textiles, metal goods, and processed food. The city was occupied by the Germans and badly damaged in both World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945).
