Nanterre, city in northern France, capital of Hauts-de-Seine Department, on the Seine River, an industrial center near Paris. Manufactures include motor vehicles, chemicals, electrical and railroad equipment, and processed food. The city, at the northern foot of Mount Valérien, is the traditional birthplace of Saint Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris, to whom the basilica here is dedicated. The University of Paris X (1971) is in the city, which was a major center of unrest during the national wave of protest calling for educational and economic reform in early 1968.
