Agen (ancient Aginnum), town in southwestern France, capital of Lot-et-Garonne Department, on the Garonne River. It is a farm-trade and manufacturing center; products include processed food (notably the dried plums called pruneaux d'Agen), clothing, and pharmaceuticals. Agen was originally the capital of the Nitriobriges, a Gallic tribe. Later it was made the capital of the county of Agenais. Agen became the seat of a bishopric in the 10th century; construction of the cathedral here was begun during the 12th century. Population 30,170 (1999).
