Kolding, city, southwestern Denmark, in Vejle County, a port at the head of Kolding Fjord, on the Jutland Peninsula. It is a transportation, commercial, and manufacturing center. Industries include shipbuilding, the export of livestock, and the manufacture of machinery and textiles. The Church of Saint Nicholas (13th century), one of the oldest stone churches in Denmark, and the Koldinghus (1248; damaged by fire in 1808 and partly rebuilt), a royal castle that houses a historical museum, are here. Kolding was mentioned in the 10th century, and its main growth began in the 13th century.
