Herning, city, western Denmark, in Ringkøbing County on Jutland. It is a transportation, commercial, and manufacturing center in a prosperous agricultural district. Products include textiles and machinery. Deposits of lignite are nearby. The Herning Museum (including an outdoor exhibit of farmhouses) and the 16-story Herning Højskole tower are points of interest in the city. Herning was a small rural village until the 1870s, when surrounding heathlands were reclaimed for agricultural use. Population (1996) 29,199.
