Esbjerg, city, southwestern Denmark, in Ribe County, Jutland, on the North Sea, near Germany. Esbjerg, a major fishing port, is a center for the export of large quantities of meat and dairy products. The port, the principal one on the western coast of Jutland, was constructed between 1868 and 1874. The city is connected with Calais, France, by a submarine cable. During World War II Esbjerg, which was occupied by German forces, was subject to heavy aerial bombardment by the Allies.
