Ústí nad Labem (German Aussig), city in the northwestern part of the Czech Republic, located on the Elbe (Czech Labe) River. The principal industries include the manufacture of chemicals, glass, soap, pottery, metal products, and woolen and cotton goods. A sugar refinery is also located in the city, and trade is considerable in grain, fruit, lumber, mineral water, and coal. Ústí nad Labem has several Gothic and Renaissance churches. Founded in the 13th century, the city was ceded by Czechoslovakia to Germany in 1938 by the terms of the Munich Pact. It was returned to Czechoslovakia in 1945. After the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Ústí nad Labem became part of the independent Czech Republic.
