Ostrava, city in the northeastern Czech Republic, located near the confluence of the Odra (Oder) and Ostravice rivers. Ostrava is a transportation hub and leading metallurgical center. Situated in the Ostrava-Karvina coalfield, it is composed of Moravska Ostrava, Slezska Ostrava, and other new communities. It has iron- and steel-rolling mills, boiler and power plants, and railroad shops. Aluminum alloys, chemicals, drugs, synthetic gases, plastics, petroleum products, building materials, apparel, ceramics, furniture, and food products are also manufactured. The State College of Mining and Metallurgy (founded in 1716) is located here. Ostrava was founded in the late 1200s, and is the site of the 13th-century Wenceslaus Church and the 17th-century Old Town Hall.
