Liberec (German Reichenberg), city in the northwestern Czech Republic, on the Neisse River (in the Czech Republic this river is called the Luzicka Nisa). The principal industry is the manufacture of textiles. Points of interest include a 16th-century church and a 17th-century castle. The city was founded in the 14th century. Liberec was dominated by Germans before and during World War II (1939-1945), but after the war the city became entirely Czech. Population (1999 estimate) 99,794.
