Ceské Budejovice (German Budweis), city in the southwestern part of the Czech Republic, a port at the confluence of the Vltava and Malse rivers. It is a rail junction and the trade center of southern Bohemia. Among its principal articles of commerce are lignite, iron ore, and other raw materials produced in the surrounding region. The city is perhaps most famous for its beer; it is the place where Budweiser beer originated. A variety of other products are manufactured in the city, including porcelain, earthenware, and lead pencils. Among the city's notable buildings are the Gothic Church of Saint Mary, the bishop's palace, and the town hall. Founded in the 13th century, the city became an episcopal see in the 18th century.
