Sankt Pölten, city in northeastern Austria, in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), on the Traisen River, between the Alps and the Danube River. It is a railroad and manufacturing center. Principal products include chemicals, paper, furniture, machinery, and textiles. Of note are a Romanesque cathedral (begun 11th century) and a Renaissance-style town hall (16th-17th century), both rebuilt in the 18th century. Situated on the site of a former Roman community, Sankt Pölten was chartered in 1159.
