Klagenfurt, city in southern Austria, capital of Kärnten (Carinthia) Province, on the Glan River. It is a winter sports resort in a scenic mountain area, and is surrounded by lakes, including the popular resort lake, Wörthersee. Klagenfurt is also the marketing center of a rich mining and agricultural region. Manufactures include textiles and leather goods. It is a Roman Catholic bishopric and has a 16th-century cathedral. Klagenfurt became a city in the late 13th century and the provincial capital in 1518. It was a military stronghold until its fortifications were demolished by the French in 1809.
