Fier, city in southwestern Albania, capital of Fier District. Fier is situated between the Seman River to the north and the Aóös (Vjöse) River to the south, at the southern edge of the Myzeqe plain. The city is the commercial center for the products of the surrounding agricultural area. It also is an important producer of energy, with an oil refinery and a thermal power plant. Other industries produce chemical fertilizer, bricks, and tile. A railroad link was built here in 1968, and the city now sits at a major road and rail junction. Fier is the site of an archaeological museum with exhibits of ancient artifacts. Just northwest of the city are the ruins of ancient Apolonia, founded by Greeks in the late 500s BC, which has been partially uncovered and restored. Fier was founded in the late 19th century.
