Panama City is governed by an elected mayor and city council, who serve five-year terms. The government is administered through neighborhood districts, which elect council members. The national government, however, plays a major role in city affairs. The U.S. government and the United Nations (UN) also exercise considerable influence.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
