Matagalpa, city, west central Nicaragua, capital of Matagalpa Department, in the central highlands. It is one of the nation's principal urban areas and an important commercial center for the nearby coffee-producing and gold-mining region. Coffee processing, flour milling, and textile manufacturing are major industries here. A cathedral from the Spanish colonial period is a noted landmark. Population (1995 estimate) 70,000.
