Since 1990 Managua has been governed by an elected mayor and 20-member council. The mayor's powers are extensive, especially his ability to award government jobs and contracts. In the city's poor neighborhoods, support remains strong for the Sandinistas, the revolutionary movement that defeated the Somoza family dictatorship and governed Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
