The city's major economic activities are government, services, and communication. National and municipal governments employ tens of thousands, while other city residents work in communications, health, trade, and education. Managua is also the location of most of Nicaragua's industry, which produces a wide variety of consumer goods, including beer, soft drinks, processed foods, cement, agricultural chemicals, and textiles.
Located along the Pan-American Highway, Managua is the hub of the nation's highways and has its only international airport. It is located on the main railroad line, but that is little used. All four of Nicaragua's daily newspapers and most weekly and monthly publications are produced in Managua. The surrounding area is agricultural, producing mainly cotton, corn, and some cattle.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
