Puerto Cortés, town in northwestern Honduras, Cortés Department, on the Gulf of Honduras. It is the country's busiest Caribbean port and serves as a manufacturing and distribution center for the surrounding agricultural region. Bananas, coffee, and wood are shipped from here. Major manufactures include processed food, beverages, soap, leather items, and refined petroleum. The community was established nearby in 1525 as Puerto Caballos and was moved to its present site and renamed in 1869. Population (1995 estimate) 33,900.
