El Progreso, city in northwestern Honduras, in Yoro Department, on the Ulúa River, in the Sula Valley. El Progreso, one of the largest municipalities in Honduras, is primarily a trade center for the surrounding agricultural area, which contains large banana plantations. It was established in the 1920s. Population (1995 estimate) 85,400.
