Chiquimula, capital city of the department of Chiquimula, southeastern Guatemala, located 106 km (66 mi) east of Guatemala City. Chiquimula lies 379 m (1243 ft) above sea level and has a warm climate. It is a market town for a region noted for its livestock and agricultural products. Of interest within the town are the ruins of a colonial church destroyed by earthquake in 1765. Population (1995 estimate) 33,028.
