Castries, city and capital, Saint Lucia, in the West Indies. It is a seaport situated on a nearly landlocked harbor in the northwestern part of the island. Major exports include bananas, sugarcane, limes, cacao, coconuts, and rum. The city also has a substantial tourist industry. Nearby are Vigie Airport and Morne Fortune, a hill that affords a good view of the area. Founded by the French in 1650, Castries came under definitive British control in 1814. Much of the city was destroyed by fire in 1948. It became the capital of independent Saint Lucia in 1979.
