Gonaïves, also Les Gonaïves, town, western Haiti, capital of L'Artibonite Department. Gonaïves is an important seaport and commercial center located on the coast of the Gonâve Gulf. Coffee, cotton, sugar, bananas, and cabinet woods are major exports. The independence of Haiti was declared here in 1804. Population (1994 estimate) 34,000.
