Puerto Plata, also San Felipe de Puerto Plata, city in the northern Dominican Republic, capital of Puerto Plata Province, on the Atlantic Ocean near Santiago. Chocolates and matches are manufactured here. Puerto Plata is one of the country's leading ports; exports include tobacco, coffee, and sugarcane. The area is also a center for tourism on the northern coast. An international airport was established here in the late 1970s. Population (1989 estimate) 53,000.
