Barahona, city in southwestern Dominican Republic, capital of Barahona Province, in a semiarid region on Neiba Bay (an arm of the Caribbean Sea). It is one of the nation's largest cities and a processing and commercial center for a farming region. A large sugar refinery, which uses sugarcane from nearby plantations, is a principal source of employment. The city also has a lumber industry. Population (1981) 49,334.
