Pinar del Río, city, western Cuba, capital of Pinar del Río Province, near the foot of the Sierra de los Órganos. It is a transportation center for the surrounding Vuelta Abajo agricultural region in which, along with tobacco, the principal crop, sugarcane, pineapple, and coffee are also cultivated. Major manufactures include tobacco products and furniture. A museum of marine fauna is here. The city is linked to Havana by railroad and highway. Its main growth began in the mid-19th century.
