Lampang, city in northwestern Thailand, capital of Lampang Province, on the Wang River, near Chiang Mai. A road hub on the northern railroad, the city is in a forested area and is an important center of the timber industry. The surrounding region, partly irrigated, also grows rice, coffee, sugarcane, and tobacco. Lignite, iron, copper, antimony, zinc, and lead are found in the province. Industries in the city include sawmilling, textile weaving, tanning, sugarcane pressing, and wood carving. Lampang was founded in the 6th or 7th century and originally was situated southwest of the present site.
