Ch'ungju, city in central South Korea, in North Ch'ungch'ong Province, on the Han River. It is a rail, road, and trade center for an agricultural area where rice, soybeans, tobacco, cotton, and peaches are produced. The city has a fertilizer plant, and a hydroelectric power plant is nearby. The city was called Chushu under Japanese rule (1910-1945).
