Ch'unch'on, also Chuncheon, city in northern South Korea, the capital of Kangwon Province, on the Pukhan River near Seoul. It is an agricultural trade center and rail terminus in an area producing rice, millet, soybeans, honey, and charcoal. A hydroelectric power plant is nearby. The city is the site of Ch'unch'on National College of Agriculture, Ch'unch'on College of Education, and Songsim Women's College. Under Japanese rule (1910-1945) the city was called Shunsen. Population (1995) 235,067.
