San Juan del Monte, commonly called San Juan, municipality in the northern Philippines, on the island of Luzon in Rizal Province. Part of the Manila metropolitan area and the National Capital Region, San Juan is bordered by the San Juan River on the west (across the river is Manila), by Mandaluyong on the south, and by Quezon City on the north and east. San Juan has become a major residential and industrial area for Manila. The large Greenhills residential subdivisions are located in San Juan as is Camp Crame, a base of the Philippine national police. The battle of San Juan del Monte, the first battle of the Philippine Revolution against Spain, was fought in San Juan on August 30, 1896. The site of the battle is called Pinaglabanan. Population (1999) 117,583.
