Parañaque, municipality in the northern Philippines, on the island of Luzon, in Rizal Province. Part of the Manila metropolitan area and the National Capital Region, Parañaque is located 12 km (7 mi) south of Manila's downtown and faces Manila Bay. It is bordered on the south by Las Piñas, on the east by Muntinglupa and Taguig, on the north by Pasay and Manila, and on the west by the bay. The international terminal of Manila International Airport is located in Parañaque, while the domestic terminal and most of the runways are in Pasay. Parañaque's other notable economic activities include fishing and handcrafted embroidery. Parañaque was once a farming area that produced vegetables and other crops for Manila's markets, but in the 1950s the municipality began to be absorbed and urbanized by greater Manila. Today, Parañaque is a growing residential suburb. Typical of Manila's newer outer suburbs, Parañaque's population has grown rapidly, by 48 percent between 1980 and 1990. This compares to 34 percent growth in the entire National Capital Region during the 1980s and 26 percent for the nation. Population (1999) 439,849.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Paranaque municipality Information info
