Las Piñas, municipality in the northern Philippines, on the island of Luzon, in Rizal Province. Part of the Manila metropolitan area and the National Capital Region, Las Piñas is located 13 km (8 mi) south of Manila's downtown, near the wealthy suburb of Makati and Manila International Airport. It is bordered on the west by Manila Bay. Fishing is important, and many fish ponds are located along Manila Bay. Las Piñas has also been a major center of salt production; clothing and shoe manufacturing are also important industries. Las Piñas is predominantly residential, with many subdivisions built in the 1980s and 1990s. As with most of Manila's suburbs, Las Piñas's population has grown very rapidly, by 117 percent between 1980 and 1990. This compares to 34 percent growth for the entire National Capital Region during the 1980s and 26 percent for the nation. Population (1999) 523,910.
