Hungnam, port and industrial center, eastern North Korea, in South Hamgyong Province, on Korea Bay (an arm of the East Sea or Sea of Japan). Major manufactures include petroleum products, primary metals, chemicals, and textiles. Hungnam was a small fishing village until the 1920s, when it was developed as an industrial center by the Japanese. It was badly damaged during the Korean War (1950-53).
